Earl May Garden Center - Iowa City IA

We went to Earl May yesterday, Dec. 19, to find a tree for Christmas, and purchased an absolutely beautiful tree from their lot that is still fresh and fragrant! They kindly cut off a bit of the trunk so that can drink the water and stay fresh longer. With good cheer they bundled it up and put it in our car and it is even prettier at home than it appeared on the lot. Great shape, full branches, and beautiful top that touches our ceiling. It is late in the season for getting a tree and the pickings were slim (and scraggly) elsewhere. Thank you Earl May and Happy Holidays to all of your great staff!

So thrilled with the service I received at Earl May today! This beauty was in one hanging pot for $40. I explained I was looking for 3 philodendrons to fill up this cascading planter and asked if she thought I could get away with splitting it up. She looked carefully at it and then offered to split it in 3 for me right there at the counter! She was so patient and delicate with it and I’m totally in love with the result! Your staff deserve a massive kudos— that’s the kind of service that guarantees I will be back!

The staff are very friendly. I like how knowledgeable they are, too. They were able to help me find some creeping phlox for my garden. The checkout line was a little long, but I blame that more on everybody buying a huge cart of plants than on the employees. The selection is great. They have many different annuals, perennials, trees, herbs, and vegetables. They usually have several varieties to choose from, too, and not just one type like Walmart or Lowe's. I really appreciate that, especally for annual flowers. I like variety and not just the generic mass produced seedlings you see everywhere. The plants are at an okay price. I would wait for a sale if I were buying more than a few plants, and I wouldn't buy their mini-succulents at $5 each when I can find similar plants at other places for $2 or $3. Overall, it is a great place to shop. Will be back again when I have more time to garden.
