Generally unimpressed. I want to stress that I’m talking about their online ordering which may have nothing to do with the in person experience. I received my order exactly one month after it was submitted (submitted in May, so this was not for seasonal delay). The plants are very small with 8 crammed into a very small overstuffed box that fit in my mailbox. The included insert states not to worry about any damage/wilting of the plants, because they have healthy root systems and will rebound. In the same insert, it states they refuse to take responsibility for anything that goes wrong after 72 hours. None of my plants are overtly dead, but only about half look healthy enough I’m confident they’ll live. I’m including photos of the box and size/quality of plants I received.
This is not just a nursery. This is the NYBG meets an English style farmhouse. Amazing stone walls, barn quilts and a giant cairn that puts an accent on the great vistas in the back. Very tidy and organized place. I visited in early April. I can only imagine the explosion of colors this place provides in spring and summer. A true gem that makes me love Maine even more. This was the only place that had the tree I wanted (European copper beech) and I had called more than 50 nurseries in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. The owner, Steve, is knowledgeable and a great guy to talk horticulture with. Rarely do you see someone this passionate about plants. Very impressed and proud that there are still people as passionate about gardening as Steve.
This garden center is amazing. It has a different vibe compared to the commercial gardens around. When you drive up the driveway, it feels like you are heading up to someone's house, which really you are. The owners live on-site and have been on this land for generations. The plants are lovingly tended to by great staff. Definitely seek one of them out so they can help you find what you are looking for. They are knowledgeable about the plants and great at giving tips. They suggested I come back every few weeks to see what is blooming. They have a great selection from trees, hanging baskets, herbs as well as annuals and perennials. Their hosta selection is amazing! They have them arranged by size and even carry giant hostas. I will definitely be returning.
The worst plant order experience I've had. Last June I ordered 10 hardy geraniums, $156.72 total, and received the tiniest starts - they looked like thinned seedlings - and were poorly packaged. I sent a picture and was assured that they would grow - "While the items you received are young, they have healthy, viable root systems. The foliage is trimmed to help prevent rot during shipping and you should remove any that have broken and/or rotted." HAH! Only three plants made it - nothing bloomed last year and now that they are blooming this year none of the three are the actual variety I ordered! Phenomenal waste of my money and my time.
If you haven't been to Fieldstone Gardens in Vassalboro, I recommend you take a little trip and go there. What a beautiful location!!! It is a little off the wall on how to get to it cause you feel like you are driving up someone's driveway, technically you are, and you have to watch for outgoing traffic since there isn't much room. Once you get there and park, you are surrounded by all different kinds of trees, flowers, bushes, and smells. They have a wonderful variety to choose from and don't forget to take a little walk to the back field 😀
